HIST 400 ... and the American Revolution divided the “mother country” from her main consumer colonies. Dissenters challenged Protestant uniformity in England and Scotland, while Catholics in Ireland and Great Britain suffered religious intolerance and, often, economic deprivation. With each generation, new and often competing political ideals emerged from competition for power between landed elite and monarchy, the “middling sort” and the wealthy, workers and employers. Course requirements include a 15 to 20-page paper based on original research and preparatory source analysis. HIST 430 ... pay particular attention to topics such as land use, the role of environments in conflicts among Native Americans and subsequent inhabitants of the West, the development of water resources, and the implications of population expansion and urbanization in the West. By exploring these issues, the class will introduce students to some of the critical themes and debates in the historiography of western environments. |
