If you still haven't decided what to major in, don't panic!

Academic Advising and Career Center staff are here to help you.

Your freshman year can be a time to explore courses and areas of study which are interesting to you.  An Academic Advisor can assist you in learning which courses will also meet lower-division GE requirements.  Be aware, however, that some majors have very prescribed courses to take, even during your freshman year.  Business, Liberal Studies, the sciences, and Nursing are examples of such majors.  Our Academic Advisors can help guide you through the major requirements and other University requirements needed to graduate.

A Career Counselor will help you determine your interests, skills, aptitudes, values and personality related to major selection and ultimately career goals.   These services are available to any matriculated student here at Cal State San Marcos.   The Career Center also provides up-to-date information on employment trends, job outlooks, and salaries,

The Career Center staff are available to help you research graduate programs of study and coach you through the entire job search process as you get closer to graduation.

If you have an idea of what major you would like to pursue:

  • Schedule an Advising Appointment.  This will ensure that you are meeting with an Advisor who is fully knowledgeable about the major.

If you have no idea what to major in:

  • Visit the Career Center to get some help with learning more about career and educational opportunities and what would be a good match for you.

Many majors include specific lower-division courses which can also meet General Education requirements, so by choosing a major early on in your studies here, you will likely graduate in a more timely manner.
