The Arts and Technology Track of the VPA department has a steady
stream of internships we can offer to our students. We have student
interns in video production, television, graphic design, web development,
high school teaching (technology), media arts and activism, feature
film production, and recording technologies. Most of these students
become full time employees at these companies upon graduation.
Our majors have gone on to graduate school, most recently UCSD,
UCLA and Vermont College in video and media arts. Many of our students
continue as artists after they graduate. They also teach undergraduate
courses, and work in the industry once they have graduated. We have
students working as design directors, web systems developers, video
producers, teachers in media arts programs in high schools, musicians
and recording technicians. Internships have prepared our student
for positions in Graphic Design, which in San Diego County, the
new job growth rate is 24.3%, which is much faster than the county-wide
average of 15.3% (2004 Occupational Outlook Report, San Diego Workforce
Partnership).
Our alumni also work in technical theater positions at Legoland
and other commercial institutions of this type. There is substantial
regional demand for graduates from our program, and the Arts and
Technology track prepares them for work.

U
Deserve Beautiful is an
initiative ( school clubs and forums, web presence, related music
and clothing/accessories line sold) that seeks to empower girls
and young women to expect more of themselves and others. Our goal
is for every girl and women to take a stand against, "mean girls",
abusive partners, and a society that often places a higher value
on looks rather than heart and intelligence. Our hope is that as
girls and women, we change the world by banding together and building
each other up, instead of competing and bringing each other down.
Too many of us have been hurt in one way or another by how the
world works now. Our goal is to effect change -- starting today
by embracing the belief that we all Deserve Beautiful and never
settle for less!
Initiative Needs/Job Descriptions
Web Site Development--Our goal is to have this
site be interactive i.e., have it be a place where girls and
women can share their stories and encourage each other. We also
will have resources and links to sites that are useful and encouraging
to girls and women. Clothing, music, and other accessories from
the UDB line will be available for purchase on the site as well.
This will be a "cool" line
that young women and girls will want to wear and it will be the
basis of our advertising as a way of getting our message out. A
percentage of the proceeds will go to a non-profit that is related
to our movement.
Logo Design--Our goal is for this design element to depict iconically
or symbolically women and girls sharing their power and strength
with each other and creating positive change for themselves and
others by doing do. We want the U Deserve Beautiful statement to
be at the forefront of all products and related materials associated
with our cause. We will use encouraging messages along with it
in order to reinforce our goals of unity and higher standards and
expectations for ourselves and others. For example the front of
a shirt would say,
U Deserve Beautiful, the logo would be shown, and then another
statement such as, "Encourage Each Other" or "No
Mean Girls" would be with it.
