Topics Courses seeking Initial GE certification ["½-year" cycle]

(T-form and appropriate GE form)

Note that if the GEC has certified a previous offering of this same topic, then the "0-year" process described above may be used.

  1. College Review Level (See College procedures and timelines).
  2. If the College recommends approval, it sends the course proposal to Academic Programs.
  3. Academic Programs sends the course proposal to the GEC. The GEC reviews the proposed topics course for use in fulfillment of General Education requirements. If the GEC approves the course for use in General Education and the Associate Vice President for Academic Programs approves the topic offering, then the course is included in the on-line Class Schedule with the appropriate GE course attribute, and the topic description is also included in the on-line Class Schedule.

In order for a General Education designation to be included in the on-line Fall Class Schedule, the GEC needs to complete the certification process and notify Academic Programs by the fourth week of January.  In order to allow sufficient time for careful review at GEC, proposals for Fall implementation should be submitted to Academic Programs by the start of the preceding  Spring semester.

In order for a General Education designation to be included in an on-line Spring Class Schedule, the GEC needs to complete the certification process by the fourth week of September. Therefore, proposals for Spring implementation should be submitted to Academic Programs by the end of the first week of the preceding Fall semester.

GE Course proposals which are approved by the GEC after these dates (fourth week of January for Fall, and fourth week of September for Spring) - but before the start of the semester for which implementation is desired - can still be offered, and they will appear in the on-line Class Schedule.  It is recommended that these proposals be submitted as early as possible.
