RESIDENCY

RESIDENCY STATUS

What is a Residency Status?

Under California's uniform law, each CSU campus must determine the residency status of all new and returning students. Non-California residents are required to pay nonresident tuition and meet other conditions.

RESIDENCY DETERMINATION

What is a Residency Determination?

Generally, to be eligible for the California resident classification, an adult applicant must have established and maintained permanent residence in California

Residence of applicants under the age of 19 on the residency determination date is based on the residency status of their parents.

Assembly Bill 540

AB540 allows undocumented students to pay in-state tuition at California Community Colleges and California State Universities if:

  • The undocumented student has attended high school in California for 3 years of more;
  • The undocumented student has graduated from a California high school or attained the equivalent;
  • The undocumented student is an entering or current student as of 2001/2002 school year or later;
  • The undocumented student has filed an affidavit with the college or university stating that the student has filed an application to legalize his of her immigration status, or will file an application to legalize as he or she is eligible to do so.
