The CICSC was honored and proud to welcome Master Kumeyaay Speaker, Cultural Educator and Mentor, Mr. Stan Rodriguez (Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel) to the CSUSM screening of "First People - Kumeyaay". Professor Jonathan Berman graciously allowed us to hold the event during his Survey of World Cinemas class on Tuesday evening. The event began with introductions from the Director of the CICSC Joely Proudfit, Ph.D. (Luiseño) and Theresa Gregor, Ph.D. (Kumeyaay) who were ecstatic and privileged to present the film for California Indian Day. We were overjoyed to have an influential member of the Native community in attendance.

A Conversation On Cultural Appropriation
When: October 7, 2014
Where: CSUSM - USU Ballroom B & D
About: Tuesday Oct, 7th CSUSM kicked off Diversity Awareness month with a presentation on cultural appropriations by Dr. Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee). Dr. Harjo is poet, writer, lecturer and advocate for Native American rights and policies. Dr. Harjo has been working for over 20 years in ridding sports of offensive and stereotypical mascots, to include the current affairs with the Washington football team over its derogatory name. The event entitled “Clasping Hands Across Cultures for Unity and Strength” brought awareness and education to the students and community of San Marcos. Many were urged and encouraged to stand up for what is appropriate and respect one another by welcoming diversity and ending stereotypes and profiling. After the event Dr. Harjo met with students and guests for photo opportunities with many clasping hands for unity and strength.
