Did you know that each day in America alone we use and throw away 500 million straws—enough disposable straws to fill over 46,400 large school buses per year? That's enough plastic straws to wrap around the Earth Twice!
In fact, plastic straws are listed as number five amongst the top ten most found plastic items found in the ocean.
Every plastic ever made is still in existence today, once plastic enters our waterways and oceans, they are only capable of breaking down into microplastics. Plastic Kills Marine Life. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), there will be more plastic by weight in the world’s oceans than fish by 2050 if current trends continue.
Be a part of the solution and ask yourself, "Do I really need that plastic straw?" There are many Eco Friendly alternatives to plastic straws like reusable straws or biodegradable paper straws. You CAN make a difference and every straw counts!
For the month of February, CSUSM is committed to going straw free! By removing self service straws and enforcing a "straws upon request" policy, we are greatly reducing our impact on the environment.
Remember to bring your own straw when you go out to eat or if you don't have one, simply ask for no plastic straw to be placed inside of your drink. These are easy ways in which you can make a difference, to save the environment now and for future generations to come. Be the change you wish to see in the world and stop using single use plastic straws today! Be plastic straw free not just for the month of February but for LIFE! Our planet will thank you for it!
