Mission
The mission of the Mathematical Sciences Program at CSUSM is to provide the finest possible academic environment in which to teach, to learn, to appreciate, to apply, and to create mathematics and mathematical sciences. The program aims to graduate students whose mathematical knowledge and skills include both oral and written communication proficiency: mathematical ideas and principles underlying major areas of modern knowledge; critical habits of mind that aid in understanding, extending, and applying future mathematical encounters; awareness of technological advances and how to use them to visualize, interpret, and solve mathematical problems; the ability and desire to synthesize and integrate within and across disciplines; the spirit and enthusiasm for productive work; an understanding of the importance of the need to contribute to the betterment of society.
The program is committed to a learning and scholarly environment in which students gain a well rounded education not only through the mathematics program, but also through interaction with others throughout the university community. Through these encounters and learning experiences the program encourages the students to develop the capacity to judge wisely not merely in technical matters, but in matters of life and conduct as well. The program is obliged to provide the best possible faculty, in terms of preparation, requirements, and potential, in order to deliver the teaching/learning goals and to contribute to the scholarly and creative productivity of the institution.
