WASC Core Compentencies

CSU San Marcos is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, and complies with the Standards of Accreditation that reflect widely accepted good practices in higher education.

Particularly, Standard 4 Educational Quality: Student Learning, Core Competencies, and Standards of Performance," states that "institutions of higher education have a responsibility to document that students acquire knowledge and develop higher-order intellectual skills appropriate to the level of the degree earned."

These core competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Written Communication
  • Oral Communication
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Information Literacy
  • Critical Thinking

In fall 2015, the Core Competencies Team completed a systematic assessment of each Core Competency in order to ascertain the competency level of senior students across campus. At the conclusion of each competency assessment activity, the data was analyzed, and summary reports with recommendations were shared campus-wide.
