Dennis Pugh, Head Coach
With more than 30 years of
coaching experience, Dennis Pugh has brought instant credibility to
a Cal State San Marcos baseball program that he’s building from the
ground up.
A San Diego coaching legend, Pugh
spent 27 years at Mission Bay High School, guiding the team to 18
league championships, 12 CIF championship finals appearances, and 8
CIF Championships. The team has also won a state championship, and
been nationally ranked as high as #2.
In the last few years, Pugh has
coached two players selected in the first round in the Major League
Baseball Draft. Shortstop and pitcher Matt Bush was selected with
the first overall pick in 2004 by the San Diego Padres, and
power-hitting first baseman Henry Sanchez was selected 39th by the
Minnesota Twins in 2005. Pugh has coached numerous other players who
were drafted, as well as many who received college scholarships to
play baseball. The 2005-2006
season was the last at Mission Bay for coach Pugh, who was also the
school’s football coach and athletic director.
In his first year at Cal State San
Marcos, despite a very freshman-heavy roster Coach Pugh guided the
Cougars to a very respectable season. After an 0-8 start while the
program got its feet on the ground, his team closed out the year by
winning 18 of its final 33 games, posting an overall record of
18-23. With another year of recruiting and a building buzz around
the program, expect Pugh’s winning track record to quickly include
Cal State San Marcos. |
