The inaugural season of men's soccer at Cal State
San Marcos proved to be one to remember. Behind an excellent
first recruiting class, the team hit the ground running and never
looked back. With Head Coach Ron Pulvers, coming off a
successful stint at Baker University, at the helm, the Cougar men posted an
unbelievable 12-3-1 record. Spearheading the effort was senior
captain Ben Crouse, a transfer from Notre Dame, who anchored the
Cougars' stout defense and provided leadership to the young team.
Freshmen Bradley Seidenglanz, Michael Nuovo, and Curtis Marcikic
handled the offense, combining to score 25 goals in the team's 16
games. But when it came time to announce the playoff
qualifiers, the Cougars, hurt by the fact that they're an
independent school in a region dominated by the GSAC Conference,
were left on the outside looking in.
With expectations high entering the 2007 season,
the team faced pressure that they had previously not experienced.
No longer were they an "expansion" team just looking to surprise
people - they were now expected to compete with the
GSAC schools. The fact that the team has lost its leader in
Ben Crouse and was facing a considerably more difficult schedule
were somewhat lost - that is, until the season began.
Struggling to ever get into a rhythm and find their identity, the
Cougar men eventually finished with a 6-10 record. |
