Playing with a freshman-heavy roster, the
Cougar men's golf team took finished 6th out of 6 teams at the
Mustang Invitational, the squad's first tournament of the fall
season.
Scott Conway's performance was a major bright
spot for the team during the two-round tournament. The junior
followed up a first-round 77 with a very impressive second-round
69, finishing the tournament in a tie for fifth place. His second
round score matched the lowest of any golfer in the tournament.
Other Cougar golfers participating included
Kyle Anderson, Arek Legarra, Mike Leonard, and Kyle Kelch. All
managed to shoot under 80 on the par-72 course in their first
round, but the latter three failed to do so in the second round.
Freshman Ryan Brotman also made the trip, shooting an impressive
76-76. However, he competed as an individual, and thus his total
was not counted towards CSUSM's final score.
Concordia University won the tournament by 19
strokes, posting cumulative scores of 293 and 291. Holy Names
Univ. finished second.
The event was held at Angeles National Golf
Course in L.A. Though the squad finished last, it was not entirely
unexpected, given that some of its top players were not competing.
It gave assistant coach Cory Scoggin a chance to see many of the
new players on the team, and those players a chance to compete in
their first tournament at the college level.
By the spring season, Scoggin and head coach
Fred Hanover expect the team to be competing at a very high level.
To gear up for that, the squad will participate in two more fall
tournaments in the coming months. Next on the schedule is an event
at Santa Rosa Country Club, hosted by Sonoma State University from
October 22-24th.
