Complete Box Score
In CSUSM's first baseball game against a ranked
team, the Cougar squad avoided getting blown out, but lost 8-0 to
Cal Baptist. The loss drops the Cougars to 0-7 in their inaugural
season.
Lancers' starter Eric Anderson pitched 3 inning
of no-hit ball, striking out two and walking one en route to
picking up the win. Reliever Andrew Newman tossed 3 perfect
innings of his own. Cal Baptist took a no-hitter into the seventh,
but it was broken up by a Terry Moritz single.
Mortiz's single was one of just three hits on
the day for CSUSM. Steve Harris and Jason Kutzler led off the 8th
with back-to-back singles, but a strikeout and double play quickly
ended the threat.
Cal Baptist had no such trouble getting on the
scoreboard, pushing across 6 runs in the first 4 innings against
Cougar starter Chris Skaalen. Three of those runs came across in
the first, courtesy of a pair of RBI singles by Aaron Seuss and
Kevin Wright, and an RBI double by Sean Kelley. In the third,
Kelley would double in another run as part of a three-run inning.
Reliever Gerald Casanada would calm things down
a bit for the Cougars, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in two innings
of work. Travis Zabel cleaned things up with a perfect 7th and
8th. For Cal Baptist, relievers Kyle Tye, Bobby Kelley, and Chilly
Ronquillo preserved the shutout, pitching one scoreless inning
each.
The Cougars will have little time to rest after
Wednesday's night game - on Thursday the squad will travel to
Point Loma Nazarene to face the Sea Lions for the second time this
season.
