Competing in a field of 17 schools, the Cougar
men's golf team has finished in 7th place at the Point Loma/Smee
Builders Invitational. Scott Conway was the top Cougar, tying for
21st.
The three-round tournament concluded on Tuesday
with the Cougars posting 3 solid-but-not spectacular rounds. On
the par 71 6,834-yard course, the team got off to a bit of a rough
start with a first round (+24) 308, but quickly settled down to
shoot back-to-back 301's in the final two rounds.
So far this season, the primary theme for the
team has been top-to-bottom consistency, and this week's
tournament was no exception. All five Cougar golfers finished
between 21st and 40th place in the field of over 80 golfers.
Conway led the way, shooting three solid rounds (75 - 76- 74) to
finish at +12 (225).
He was followed closely by Brandon Scolman, who
tied for 26th with a +14 (227). Scolman's second-round 71 was the
best for any Cougar during the tournament.
Rounding out the squad were Matt Determan,
Markus Wendel, and Kyle Anderson. Determan, who has been excellent
so far this season, recovered from a first round 80 to shoot
rounds of 75 and 76.
As a team, the Cougars edged out Grand Canyon
U. by one stroke to take 7th. The tournament was won by Wayland
Baptist, who shot 874. CSU Stanislaus' Eric Justesen won the
individual title with an even-par 213 total.
CSUSM will next take the course at Diablo Grand
Country Club on March 17th. |
