Track Team Competes at Aztec Invitational
March 18, 2007

After the distance runners' great performance Friday at Occidental, the rest of the track team had a chance to shine at the Aztec Invitational this weekend.

Highlights of the day included B.B. Shey winning the 800-meter run. Competing against a field of 16 other runners, Shey finished first in the preliminaries, then went on to win the finals with a time of 2:14.61.

Taliah Chatterfield also tallied a victory, winning the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 14.56 was her best of the season, and bumps her up from the "B" standard to the "A" standard (with regard to Nationals qualifying).

Samantha Showns, who has already qualified for Nationals, continued performing well in the 400-meter. And Lucia Asbury, who you might remember as being a key defender on the Cougar soccer team, finished 5th in the 400 with a time of 58.71 - less than a second away from what is needed to qualify.

Other strong performances from the Cougar women included Namadhjlah McIntosh taking 3rd in the 100-meter with a time of 12.61, and the 4x400-meter finishing second, only behind the University of Iowa. In field events, Andrea Talhami placed 5th in the triple jump, and Luci Lapp placed 7th in the javelin.

On the men's side, Dominique Younger earned his trip to Nationals in the 400-meter hurdles. He placed second with a time of 55.18.

Billy Walker won the 100-meter dash for the second week in a row. His time of 11.03 isn't quite low enough to qualify him for Nationals, but it's not far off. Austin Sylvia took 4th in that event, and Kyle Leavy placed 6th.

In the 400-meter, Kevin Ott Wright ran 49.55 to take 4th. The 4x100-meter relay team gave a strong performance as well, taking 2nd.

In men's field events, pole vaulter David Freund cleared 4.50 meters, just 0.2 meters off what it will take to get to Nationals. And Ronnie McFadden placed 5th in the shot put and 4th in the discus.

The Cougars will be competing next week at Point Loma.
