Riley, Conway Lead Men's Golf to Strong 4th Place Finish at Diablo Grande Invitational
March 21, 2007

Complete Box Score

Continuing what has been a very strong season thus far, the Cougar men's golf team finished 4th at the Diablo Grande Invitational on Tuesday. Junior Scott Conway and freshman Kevin Riley led the team with scores of +5 (221), good for a sixth-place tie.

The three-round tournament, which was hosted by Drake University on a pair of par-72 courses, featured 10 teams from the NCAA and NAIA. Sacramento State won the event with a total score of 885, but CSUSM wasn't far behind, shooting 902. They finished just one shot behind Sonoma State for 3rd.

It's no surprise to see Scott Conway near the top of the leaderboard. As expected, he's been very consistent this spring, always finishing first or second on the team. This week's tournament was no exception, as Conway got off to a great start with a -2 (70) before shooting rounds of 76 and 75. He finished just 5 shots off the tournament winner, Scott DeBorba of Sacramento State.

What could be considered a surprise, however, was the terrific play of freshman Kevin Riley. He shot an even-par 72 in round one, followed that up with a +1 (73), and closed out with a +4 (76). Riley was actually tied for the tournament lead entering round three. Coming off a solid tie for 15th at the Cougar Invitational, this great showing at Diablo Grande further establishes Riley as one of the squad's top golfers.

Following the top two golfers, Markus Wendel continued his rock solid play with a +10 (226), good for 17th place. Wendel's three quality rounds of 75, 77, and 74 were just what you'd expect from him based on his performance this season so far.

Rounding out the Cougars were Matt Determan, who tied for 33rd +19 (235), and Arek Legarra, who finished 43rd +26 (242). Next up for the men's golf team will be a tourney at Cypress Ridge from March 28-30.
