On Saturday, The Cougar track team continued
its excellent season by finishing up the three-day PLNU
Invitational. CSUSM athletes placed high on the leaderboard in
nearly every event on Saturday, and a few more qualified for
Nationals.
First, the winners. On the men's side, Sergio
Gonzalez continued his excellent spring by defeating the field in
the 1,500m run. He easily won the seeding race by 8 seconds before
running 4:03.68 in the finals to take the event. And Daniel
Crescitelli gave a great performance in the long jump, tallying
6.60m to win the event by a pretty large margin.
On the women's side, the runners came out in
force, with Namadhjlah McIntosh, B.B. Shey, Taliah Chatterfield,
and Sarai Ivory all winning their events. McIntosh took the 100m
dash in 12.46 seconds, just slightly off the mark required to
qualify for Nationals. Shey won the 800m dash, an event in which
she's already surpassed the "A" standard qualifying
mark, with a time of 2:13.80. Meanwhile, Chatterfield and Ivory
won the 100m and 400m hurdles, respectively. Chatterfield's 14.82
bumps her up to the A standard, while Ivory's 105.78 earned her
the B-standard.
The Cougars also had plenty of second and third
place finishers on the day. Billy Walker qualified for the
B-standard in the 100-meter dash, running 10.77. He also took 3rd
in the 200m dash with a time of 21.95, and helped the men's
4x100-meter relay team qualify for Nationals with a 42.31, good
for 2nd place. The 4x400 team narrowly missed qualifying, but
should do so easily before the season ends.
Nick Stein took 2nd in the 400m dash, running
49.86. Tony Guadagnini matched that finish in the 800-meter, with
a time of 155.52. In field events, Crescitelli wasn't the only
Cougar to perform well; David Frewal took 3rd in the pole vault,
clearing 4.49 meters.
For the women, Lucia Asbury finished 2nd in the
400-meter dash, and appears poised to qualify for Nationals sooner
rather than later. Already headed there is the 4x100-meter relay
team, which ran 49.13 to finish 2nd.
Overall, the team looks great, and should
continue to improve as the season progresses. Next up for the team
is the Cal-Nevada Meet at Fresno on March 30-31. |
