On Friday, impressive performances by Scott
Conway and Markus Wendel led the Cougar men's golf team to a 10th
place finish at the Cuesta Title/Cal Poly Intercol. The two
golfers both shot +1 (217), earning them a tie for 10th.
Playing on the par-72 6,761-yard course, Conway
got off to a dynamite start. He shot a -5 (67) in round one, tying
him for the best round of the day - and as it would turn out, the
tournament. He followed that up with a +5 (77), then finishing
strong with a +1 (73).
Meanwhile, Wendel got off to a good start as
well, shooting even-par 72. His breakthrough came in the 2nd
round, as he posted a -3 (69) and finished the day in the top-5 of
the individual standings. A final round 76 dropped him a bit, but
it is still arguably Wendel's best performance as a Cougar.
Still, It was an out-of-character performance
for the Cougar team as a whole. Throughout this season, the squad
has been characterized by its great depth, with all five golfers
generally finishing in a similar spot in the standings. But this
week, a large gap after the top two Cougars and the rest is what
accounted for the relatively low team 10th place finish.
Brandon Scolman was the third-best Cougar
scorer, finishing in a tie for 72nd with a +18 (234). He did
recover nicely from a first-round 82, shooting rounds of 77 and
75. After him was Matt Determan, who took 84th with a score of +23
(239). Kevin Riley, who was tremendous in last week's tournament,
struggled a bit this time around, shooting +25 (241) to tie for
88th.
As the squad approaches Regionals and
Nationals, the trick for Coach Fred Hanover will be to get great
performances from a couple golfers like he did this week, while
getting solid performances from the rest, as has been the case
throughout the season. Regionals will be played at the Terra Lago
Golf Course in Indo, CA on April 22-24th. |
