SAN BERNARDINO Cal State San Bernardino exploded for nine runs on 10 hits in the fifth inning Saturday en route to a 15-6 non-conference victory over Cal State San Marcos at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

The victory elevated the Coyotes’ record to 21-11 on the season while the Cougars are now 10-16. CSUSB has now won six in a row.

Thirteen players batted in the big fifth inning as the Coyotes broke open a 6-3 game. Big blow of the inning was a two-run homer by catcher Chris Olsen, his first of the season, the first batter to face reliever Lance McCormick who had just come in to replace Eric Julienne. Olsen drove in his third run of the inning with a single to right center. Tony Haro also plated three runners with a two-run double and a single to left.

Senior right-hander Tim Montoya (4-1) who replaced starter Cheyne Hann in the top of the third, was credited with the win. Freshman Travis Zabel (1-1) took the loss, yielding four runs only one of them earned in 3.2 innings.

The Coyotes pounded out 18 hits, giving them 32 in the two-game series that started Friday while six Coyotes pitchers held the Cougars to just eight hits. Cal State San Marcos employed seven pitchers while the Coyotes used six.

Terry Moritz, who came on to replace starting catcher Mitch McNamara, was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Jason Hinton drove in a run and scored once and Austin May hit his fourth home run of the season to lead off the second as the Cougars moved out to a 2-0 lead.

CSUSB evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the second and took the lead, 3-2, in the third when Justin Roberson doubled to right center, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Drew Valenzuela’s single. The Coyotes added three runs for a 6-3 advantage in the fourth with two of the runs coming home on an error and a wild pitch.

First baseman Anthony Ross led the Coyotes with four hits in five at bats and scored twice to lift his season average to .425. Olsen was three-for-three with four RBI and two runs scored and lifted his average to .429 in just 14 at bats this season. Valenzuela was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored to climb over the .300 mark at .306. Roberson (.397) and Haro (.286) each had two hits in the game.
