SAN BERNARDINO Cal State San Bernardino
exploded for nine runs on 10 hits in the fifth inning Saturday en
route to a 15-6 non-conference victory over Cal State San Marcos
at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The victory elevated the Coyotes record
to 21-11 on the season while the Cougars are now 10-16. CSUSB has
now won six in a row.
Thirteen players batted in the big fifth inning
as the Coyotes broke open a 6-3 game. Big blow of the inning was a
two-run homer by catcher Chris Olsen, his first of the season, the
first batter to face reliever Lance McCormick who had just come in
to replace Eric Julienne. Olsen drove in his third run of the
inning with a single to right center. Tony Haro also plated three
runners with a two-run double and a single to left.
Senior right-hander Tim Montoya (4-1) who
replaced starter Cheyne Hann in the top of the third, was credited
with the win. Freshman Travis Zabel (1-1) took the loss, yielding
four runs only one of them earned in 3.2 innings.
The Coyotes pounded out 18 hits, giving them 32
in the two-game series that started Friday while six Coyotes
pitchers held the Cougars to just eight hits. Cal State San Marcos
employed seven pitchers while the Coyotes used six.
Terry Moritz, who came on to replace starting
catcher Mitch McNamara, was 2-for-2 and scored twice. Jason Hinton
drove in a run and scored once and Austin May hit his fourth home
run of the season to lead off the second as the Cougars moved out
to a 2-0 lead.
CSUSB evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of
the second and took the lead, 3-2, in the third when Justin
Roberson doubled to right center, advanced to third on a groundout
and scored on Drew Valenzuelas single. The Coyotes added
three runs for a 6-3 advantage in the fourth with two of the runs
coming home on an error and a wild pitch.
First baseman Anthony Ross led the Coyotes with
four hits in five at bats and scored twice to lift his season
average to .425. Olsen was three-for-three with four RBI and two
runs scored and lifted his average to .429 in just 14 at bats this
season. Valenzuela was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored to
climb over the .300 mark at .306. Roberson (.397) and Haro (.286)
each had two hits in the game.
The Cougars host Biola in a single game Monday
