Game 1
Game 2
It was a tough day for Cougar softball on
Tuesday, as the squad traveled to #4 Point Loma and was easily
swept, losing by scores of 7-0 and 10-4.
In game one, CSUSM recorded just four hits off
pitchers KC Robertson and Tyler Lent, who combined to throw the
shutout. Two of those hits came in the first inning, when the
Cougars loaded the bases with two outs but failed to push across a
run. Few CSUSM batters would reach base until the 7th and final
inning, when the squad once again had the bases loaded with two
outs, and once again failed to push across a run.
The Cougars' four hits were recorded by Erica
Coelho, Elizabeth Bush, Holly Russell, and Lindsey Preovolos.
On the mound, Coelho was the victim of 5 errors
by Cougars' defense. Despite taking the loss, Coelho was able to
pitch a complete game, and none of the 7 runs she allowed were
earned. She allowed 10 hits and while walking just 2 batters.
Game two saw the Cougar lineup come alive a
bit, but the defense continued to struggle and the team ultimately
proved no match for the powerful Point Loma offense.
CSUSM took a lead in the first, with Coelho
leading the game off with a double and eventually coming around to
score on an Amanda Sanchez sac fly. But Point Loma would answer
quickly, capitalizing on an error to score twice off starter
Amanda Sanchez.
Point Loma would push the lead to 3-1 in the
second, but in the third the Cougars would show some fight and tie
it up again. Elizabeth Bush and Danielle Tucker led off with
singles, and after advancing on a wild pitch, Tasha Stokes drove
both in with a base hit to left.
But a 5-run bottom of the inning would
effectively put the game out of reach. Melissa Gomez led off for
Point Loma with a home run, and a double by Laressa Newman and
triple by Jill Schaefer would add to the lead. The Cougars tried
to answer in the bottom of the inning, but could only push one run
across after loading the bases with one out.
Despite getting hit hard, Sanchez was able to
pitch the complete game. Of the 10 runs she allowed, 6 were
earned, and she didn't walk a single hitter. CSUSM is now 9-29 on
the year, and entering the last couple games of the year. |
