Erica Coelho’s seven strong innings on the mound and Holly Russell’s three doubles led the Cougars to an impressive 9-2 victory over Hope International on Tuesday.

Coelho gave up just three hits during the game, walking four and striking out four in allowing just the two runs. She cruised to her fourth win of the season.

Meanwhile, the Cougar lineup provided plenty of support. CSUSM got on the board first, as Elizabeth Bush doubled in Danielle Tucker to put the squad up 1-0 in the third.

After Hope took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, the Cougars would tie the game up again in the fourth. Holly Russell led off with a double, and Amanda Sanchez cashed in, singling her home in the very next at-bat.

An inning later, CSUSM would re-take the lead, and this time not let it go. Bush and Russell both tallied their second double of the game, and Tasha Stokes picked up an RBI to make the game 4-2.

The Cougars would blow the game open in the 6th. Lindsey Preovolos led off with a double, and was driven home by Samantha Valenzuela. An error allowed more runs to score, and Holly Russell drove in a pair with her school-record third double of the game. Preovolos would drive in the final run of the inning to give the team a comfortable 9-2 lead.

And thanks to Coelho, that lead would hold up. She allowed just one hit in the final three innings, and got out of a bases-loaded no-out jam in the 6th. The win improves the Cougars’ record to 10-29 on the year.
