The season may be winding down, but the Cougar Track & Field team is still going strong, and its members are still earning trips to the National Championships at Fresno. On Saturday, the squad competed at the Claremont Classic, the second-to-last opportunity for athletes to qualify for Nationals.

The big news on the day for Coach Steve Scott’s team was that two more “A” standards were earned, both on the men’s side. Kevin Ott Wright reached the mark in the 400-meter hurdles, with his time of 53.85. He finished fourth in the event, one spot behind fellow Cougar Cory Dart, who had earned his spot at Nationals earlier in the year. Also, Dominique Younger took 5th in the event with a lifetime-best time of 54.19.

Joining Ott Wright as an “A” standard qualifier is the men’s 4x800-meter team. Consisting of Sergio Gonzalez, Mike Crouch, Richie Gray, and Tony Guadagnini, the group ran 7:42.11 to place second at the event and earn their trip to Nationals.

On the women’s side, the highlight of the event was Stephanie Erdodi. A few days after being awarded the highest honor at the school’s Scholar-Athlete banquet, Erdodi earned a different kind of honor at Claremont College, qualifying for the “B” standard in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 65.78 was good for 7th in the event.

Also of note was Whitney Patton, who won the 3k event with a time of 10:34.68. Other stars on the women’s team, including Samantha Showns, Taliah Chatterfield, and Ashleigh Davis, all finished in the top-5 in their competitions as well.

Next week the squad will head to Occidental College for the final event of the season before Nationals.
