The inaugural Cal State San Marcos softball
team got together for the final time this spring, celebrating
their accomplishments with their end-of-season awards banquet on
Tuesday.
Former Head Coach Jennifer Milo, who has moved
into a full-time administrative role since the seasons end,
treated the team to a nice dinner; and, with the help of
assistants Jamie Burton and Tanya Ledesma, distributed four awards
to members of the team.
The Best Defense award, as voted on
by the players, was given to Melissa Lerno. The sophomore was the
teams ace pitcher this season, pitching 143 innings and
posting a 126-74 strikeout-to-walk ratio. She won a team-high 5
games, and finished the year with an ERA just over 3.00. When not
on the mound, Lerno was very solid at third base.
Also voted on by the players was the Best
Offense award, which was given to Elizabeth Bush. Bush
played in 40 of the teams 41 games this season, posting a
gaudy .323 batting average while slugging nearly .400. Bush was
second on the team with 17 runs scored, 5 doubles, and 20 RBIs.
The Team Captain awards were given
to Leilani Madrigal and Danielle Tucker, who did a great job in
keeping the close-knit group together even during the toughest
games. Madrigal played in 38 games, and came on strong late in the
season, tallying 5 hits and 3 runs scored in her final 4 games.
The junior was also the only upper-classmen on the teams
roster, and a vocal leader in the clubhouse. Danielle Tucker was
fantastic throughout the year, anchoring the teams defense
in centerfield and providing a consistent top-of-the-lineup
presence. From February 23rd until the end of the season (13
games), Tucker hit an amazing .500 (22-for-44) with 15 runs
scored.
Finally, the Coaches Hustle
award was given to Lindsey Preovolos. As the teams everyday
catcher, Preovolos impact went far beyond the numbers. She
always brought her A game to the ballpark, and never
took a game off. Preovolos handled the teams pitchers well,
and the freshman assumed a leadership role on the squad both
on-the-field and in the dugout.
A full season review will be available in the
coming weeks, and expect a head coaching announcement sooner than
that.
