At the end of the first round of the Men's Golf National Championships, Cal State San Marcos finds itself in a good position, tied for 7th in the 28-team field.

Cougar junior Scott Conway got off to a terrific start, shooting -1 (71) at the par-72 course at Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Indiana. Conway has been the Cougars' leader throughout the season, and it looks like he's brought his A-game to Nationals. He's tied for 8th in the individual competition.

Second on the CSUSM squad is Brandon Scolman, who shot a very strong +1 (73) to earn a tie for 20th. Next is Markus Wendel, who really came on late in the season, and sits in a tie for 46th after round one with a score of +3 (75). Rounding out the Cougars are freshman Kevin Riley, who shot +5 (77), and Matt Determan, who struggled a bit to a +7 (79).

The team, which is ranked 10th in the NAIA, finished the day with a team score of +8, tied with Cal Baptist for 7th. Perennial powerhouse Oklahoma City has already built a big lead, shooting an incredible -7 as a team. They're six shots up on Oklahoma Christian. Oklahoma Christian's Bruno Buccolo and Oklahoma City's Daniel Mitchell are tied for the individual leads, with rounds of -4 (68).

The four-round tournament will continue through Friday.
