To nobody's surprise, #1 Oklahoma City went
wire-to-wire to win the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship,
which concluded Friday. Cal State San Marcos, behind a great
performance from junior Scott Conway, finished in a tie for 15th.
Throughout the season, the strength of the
Cougar squad was its depth. Though Conway usually finished as the
team's top golfer, the rest of the squad was rarely far behind. At
Nationals, however, Conway had by far and away the best tournament
of any Cougar. On Friday, he rebounded from a third round 79 to
shoot +2 (74), for a final four-round total of +6 (294). The tie
for 8th marks a much better result for Conway than he had at last
year's Nationals, when he tied for 79th.
Second on the team was Brandon Scolman, who
tied for 58th with a +19 (307). He shot a final-round 79, as did
fellow Cougars Markus Wendel and Kevin Riley. They finished in
90th and 96th, respectively. Matt Determan closed out with a rough
final-round 82, but finished third on the team in a tie for 73rd.
Oklahoma City's Daniel Mitchell won the
hotly-contested individual title, thanks to a final round 67. That
vaulted him three shots ahead of Point Loma's Sam Cyr, who shot a
final round 74. Mitchell's winning score was -6, and him and Cyr
were the only golfers under par for the tournament. As a team,
Oklahoma City's total of +2 was well ahead of the +20 put up by
second-place Wayland Baptist. CSUSM finished at +71.
Overall, however, the Cougar squad surpassed
expectations this season. With the team's top golfers expected
back next year, this was considered a building year for the team -
yet they managed to win the Region II Championship and make the
cut at Nationals. Expect the Cougar men's golf team to be back and
better than ever this coming fall! |
