Box Score
On Saturday, the Cougar women
continued to play good intense soccer, but ultimately fell to Dixie
State 2-0. CSUSM’s record is now 1-1-1.
Despite the loss, the coaches
and players feel very good about the team’s performance in Salt
Lake City. The squad went 0-1-1 against quality competition, and more
importantly played with team chemistry and discipline – elements
that were largely lacking with last year’s squad.
“Our commitment to hard work in practice is translating to the
field,” commented assistant coach Bobby Renneisen.
“We feel really good about the group.”
On Saturday, that hard work once again showed up on the field; but
the wear-and-tear from the trip to Salt Lake and the game yesterday
caught up to them. The
squads played a scoreless first half, with Cougar midfielder Ashley
Fugelsang knocking a shot off the post in the 13th
minute.
The game would remain scoreless through the 80th minute,
but Dixie State would score twice in the final 10 minutes to close
out the Cougars. Still,
it was yet another strong performance by the whole team, especially
freshman defender Michele Ramirez.
“Michele was the best player on the field today,” noted
Renneisen. “She was
excellent from start to finish.”
Once
the team gets back home, it won’t be long before they’re hitting
the road again – this time to play Cal State University Los
Angeles on the 29th.
