After last year’s 12-3-1
campaign last season, there was some concern about this year’s 0-2
start for Cougar men’s soccer.
But the team did its best to put those concerns to rest on
Sunday, thanks to a dominating 2-0 victory over University of Mary.
The game took place in Salt Lake
City, and was the second of two contests on the Cougars’ road
trip. Friday’s game
resulted in a disappointing 2-1 loss to host school Westminster.
But Sunday’s game told a much
different tale, thanks largely to Cougar Curtis Marcikic.
The forward tallied both of CSUSM’s goals, bringing his
total on the young season to three.
Marcikic notched his first goal
near the end of the first half, off a feed from Felix Gonzalez-Dalmas.
For Gonzalez-Dalmas, the assist is the first point of the
highly talented sophomore’s Cougar career.
Marcikic’s second goal would come on a feed from midfielder
Bradly Seidenglanz early in the second half.
The Cougar defense and midfield
was back to its rock-solid self, severely limiting U. of Mary’s
offense and generally controlling the game.
“We played really well,”
commented assistant coach Bobby Renneisen.
“We pretty much dominated the game from start to finish.”
Coming
off the win, the bus ride home won’t feel nearly as long for the
Cougar squad. They’ll
be in action again on the 29th, when they travel up to
Cal State Los Angeles.
