Facing a tough Point Loma Nazarene squad on the road, the Cougar
men’s soccer team fell 2-0 on Tuesday.
CSUSM has been unable to build
any momentum this season against the difficult schedule, and now
sits at 2-4.
On Tuesday, the team couldn’t
generate much of an attack against a stingy Point Loma defense.
The Cougars’ trio of Bradley Seidenglanz, Michael Nuovo,
and Curtis Marcikic that were such potent goal scorers last season
failed to take a single shot between them, and the team as a whole
tallied just 3 shots on goal on the day.
Point Loma took the lead once
and for all in the 24th minute, as Justin Ongaro knocked
in a deflection off the cross bar past Cougar keeper Trent Painter.
The Cougars would keep the deficit at one through the half,
but in the 59th minute Point Loma’s Erick Melendez
scored an insurance goal to make the score 2-0.
The very hot weather wore on the
Cougars, as Point Loma got revenge for an upset loss that CSUSM
handed them last season. They’re
now 3-0 on the young season.
It’s
not going to get any easier for the Cougars.
On Friday they’ll travel up to Azusa to take on #2 ranked
Azusa Pacific. Their
next home game is September 13th against UC Santa Cruz.
