Box Score
Playing in their second game
against a ranked team in as many days, the Cougar women’s soccer
team fell 4-1 to Concordia on Saturday.
The lopsided result may have had
as much to do with yesterday’s game as it did today’s. On Friday,
the Cougars were neck-and-neck with #1 Azusa Pacific for 90 minutes,
narrowly losing by a score of 1-0. Having to come back just a day
later and play another high quality squad was obviously a daunting
task for the Cougars.
But for most of the game, CSUSM
was up to the challenge. Concordia went up 1-0 early, as Shayla
Collie drilled a long shot past keeper Jane Drury in the 13th
minute. The Cougar defense would respond though, keeping the game
at 1-0 until the final 15 minutes. As a team, CSUSM matched
Concordia shot-for-shot, with each side tallying 10 shots and 5 on
goal for the contest.
Late in the game, however,
fatigue would set in and things came unraveled for the Cougars.
Concordia’s Trina McGee made it a 2-0 game in the 76th
minute with a shot into the lower left corner. The Cougars would
respond, as Clarissa Hidalgo made the game 2-1 with a goal off a
pass from midfielder Kelly Wherry.
But just 13 seconds later,
Concordia would stretch the lead to 3-1 with a long goal by Brianna
Wahrenbrock. Six minutes later, Trina McGee would add an insurance
goal to close out the scoring at 4-1.
The loss drops CSUSM to 1-4-1 on
the season. They’ll try to break their current 4-game losing streak
on September 13th, when the Cougars will be back at home
to take on Cal Baptist.
