Box Score
On Saturday, the CSUSM men’s
soccer team (2-6) played a quality game against Westmont (4-0), but
was on the losing end of the 1-0 final score.
Defense was the story of the day as the teams combined to put just
four shots on goal in what was a very tight, very physical game. The
squads combined for a whopping 47 fouls in the 90-minute contest.
CSUSM started out strong against undefeated Westmont, dictating the
pace early and severely limiting opportunities. The Cougars created
a few scoring chances of their own, but were not able to really test
Westmont keeper Justin Etherton.
Early in the second half, Westmont would break through. In the 53rd
minute, a sloppy clear from the defensive zone provided the game’s
first real scoring opportunity, as Johnny Alcaraz fed a pass to
Sammy Montemer, who slid the ball past Cougar keeper Trent Painter.
That would be the game’s only goal, as the Cougars were unable to
solve Westmont’s defense for the remainder of the contest. The drops
CSUSM to 2-6 on the season, though the team looks better than it did
early on.
“Everybody is working hard, we’re just not getting the results right
now,” commented assistant coach Bobby Renneisen. “We’ve had a bad
string of fortune.”
The Cougars will be back at Mangrum Track & Soccer Field for a
much-welcome home game on Thursday, when they’ll take on U.C. Santa
Cruz.
