The CSUSM men’s and women’s
cross-country teams competed in their second event of the season on
Saturday, and both squads continued to look good.
The men finished in 6th place, while the women
took 8th.
Competing at the Aztec
Invitational down at San Diego State, the squads found themselves in
a field that featured Division I-A schools like Arkansas and UNLV.
But the Cougars were not intimidated, staying very
competitive in both races.
On the men’s side, Juan Mejia
was CSUSM’s top performer, as usual.
The senior posted yet another top-10 finish, taking 9th
place while running 25:56.
Right behind him was fellow
senior Sergio Gonzalez. After
a somewhat disappointing junior year, Gonzalez looks like he’s
ready to have a great 2007 season.
He finished in 12th place with a time of 26:05.
Rounding out the Cougars’
top-5 were Alex Guadarrama (40th – 27:00), Patrick
Fitzgerald (48th – 27:33), and Tony Guadagnini (55th
– 27:50). Also
competing for CSUSM were Antonio Sanchez and Casey Evans.
On the women’s side, for the
second-straight week Morgan Sjogren led the team.
She placed 23rd with a time of 18:51.
Close behind were Jessica Sandoval (32nd –
19:05), who is already establishing herself as a top runner as just
a freshman, and sophomore Whitney Patton (35th – 19:08).
Also competing for the Cougar
women were Joy Leon (45 – 19:30), Kristen Simek (58 – 19:42),
Lindsey McKown (63 – 19:58), and Stephanie Cook (75 – 20:20).
The
squad will be in action two weeks from now, when they’ll travel up
to Riverside to compete in the Riverside Invitational.
