Box Score (Women)
Box Score (Men)
After playing well for the first
half of the season but not getting the results, it appears that the
Cougar women’s soccer team appears to have turned the corner.
On Saturday, the squad earned a convincing 4-1 win over
Master’s College.
Meanwhile, the Cougar men failed
to capitalize on the momentum from Thursday’s win, falling 5-2.
The loss for the men’s team drops them to 3-7 on the year,
while the win for the women boosts their season record to 3-4-1.
The current 2-game win streak
for the women has the coaching staff thinking of a possible
post-season appearance.
“The girls are doing great,”
commented Assistant Coach Bobby Renneisen.
“They’re playing their way into a potential playoff
spot.”
After a tight, scoreless first
half, the Cougar women turned up the offense for the final 45
minutes, scoring a season-high four goals in that span.
The first two came courtesy of Taylor Ziencina, who has made
quite an impact on the offense since joining the team a few games
ago.
Assisting on both Ziencina’s
scores was Lucia Asbury, who herself has been a key contributor to
the Cougar offense since she converted from the back line.
On the first goal, Asbury hit a pass to Ziencina, who
finished with a beautiful shot from outside the box.
On the second, Asbury drew a foul in the box, and Ziencina
knocked the penalty kick home.
After Master’s College scored
to make the game 2-1, Katelyn Krauss answered with a great goal to
push the lead to 3-1. Krauss
single-handedly worked her way into the box, beat a defender, and
tucked her shot into the top corner to beat the helpless keeper.
Clarissa Hidalgo would add the
final nail in the coffin with a late goal, and the Cougar women
cruised to the 4-1 victory. With
their newfound offensive prowess combined with the defensive
discipline they’ve possessed all year, the squad should be quite a
handful for the rest of the teams on their schedule.
For the men, who played great in
earning a 1-0 win over U.C. Santa Cruz on Thursday, Saturday’s
game was an unfortunate letdown.
Master’s College jumped out to a 2-0 lead by halftime, and
extended that to 5-0 in the second half.
The Cougars’ only highlights were provided by Demitri
Hidalgo, who came off the bench to score a pair of late goals,
making the final score 5-2.
Next on the schedule for the men
is UCSD on Friday, while the women will be at Point Loma on Tuesday.
