The Cougar men’s golf team got
their fall season started in solid fashion, taking 2nd in the 6-team
field at the Mustang Invitational. Scott Conway was CSUSM’s top
finisher, placing 3rd.
Hosted by The Master’s College, the two-day tournament was played at
Angeles National Golf Course in Santa Clarita, CA. For Coach Fred
Hanover’s men’s golf team, it was an opportunity for the roster to
get a feel for playing in tournament in preparation for the spring.
“We’re a somewhat inexperienced group,” noted Hanover. “This was a
good learning experience.”
Not surprisingly, Conway led the way for the team’s second-place
finish. The senior, who is the squad’s clear top golfer entering the
season, shot a total score of +5 (149) at the event. Though the
third place finish is strong, Coach Hanover knows that Conway has
brighter things in his future.
“Scott’s a very good player, and he’s going to win something this
season,” commented Hanover.
Also of note was Shezad Lakdawala’s performance. The highly-touted
freshman, competing in his first event in Cougar blue, finished
second on the team with a total score of +12 (156).
“Shezad’s going to have a real good career,” says Hanover. “He’s got
a really good head on his shoulders.”
Other Cougar golfers competing were Kyle Anderson (159), Kevin Riley
(161), Brandon Gandy (167), and Kyle Kelch (176). With this group,
Hanover believes that the experience in these fall tournaments will
set the team up for a good run this spring.
“I’m pretty pleased with our results, and optimistic about the
season,” Hanover remarked. “I think we’re a top-15 team.”
