Box Score
Coming in to Point Loma on their
longest win streak of the season, the Cougar women’s soccer team
couldn’t keep their momentum going on Tuesday, falling 2-0.
The loss drops CSUSM to 3-5-1 on the season, which has now passed
the halfway point. Point Loma Nazarene, a perennially strong team in
the GSAC Conference, is now 5-1 on the year.
Tuesday’s game started about as badly as it possibly could for the
Cougars, as just 54 seconds into the game Point Loma’s Amanda Rowand
got in on a breakaway against Cougar keeper Jane Drury, and
capitalized on the opportunity. So before the first minute of play
was gone, CSUSM found itself trailing 1-0.
While the Cougar defense would re-group and not allow a goal for the
rest of the half, the newly-revitalized offense couldn’t find any
holes in Point Loma’s defense. CSUSM took just 6 shots on the day;
less than half of Point Loma’s total of 14.
Early in the second half, Point Loma would add an insurance goal and
effectively seal the victory. In the 61st minute, Lauren Hernandez
slid a pass in front of the Cougar goal, and Christine Grover
knocked it home.
With the home stretch of the season in sight, the playoffs are still
a distinct possibility for the Cougar women. They’ll look to add to
their resume on Thursday, when they’ll travel to take on Biola.
