Cougar Women Post Impressive 4-0 Win
9/21/2007

Box Score

In what was their most dominating performance of the season, the Cougar women’s soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory at Biola University on Thursday.

The win gets the Cougars back within a single game of .500 after Tuesday’s loss to #4 Point Loma.  CSUSM is now 4-5-1 on the year, while Biola falls to 2-3.

The Cougars took control of the game early and never let go.  In the 12th minute, Lica Martinez hit a great cross that found the foot of Brittany Boyce, who knocked in her first goal in Cougar blue.

In the 38th minute the Cougars would extend the lead to 2-0, as Lucia Asbury hit a cross that Taylor Ziencina knocked home.  It was Ziencina’s third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead, and Asbury’s team-leading third assist.

With the score 2-0 at halftime, the question was whether Biola would get back into the game, or whether the Cougars would continue to dominate.  The latter would be proven true, as CSUSM made it 3-0 in the 59th minute.  Midfielder Kelly Wherry played Courtney Drummond in behind the defense, and Drummond, as she usually does, finished the opportunity.  She slid the shot under the keeper for her first goal of the season.

The final tally came in the 75th minute, as Sierra Young hit a ball into the box, and Ashley Fugelsang provided the quick finish for her second goal of the year.

The 4-0 score would hold, as keepers Jane Drury and Jordanne Moore combined for the shutout.  CSUSM’s defense was just as impressive as its offense, with Breanna Brenton leading the way on Thursday.  Overall, it was as good as the team has looked all season.

“Everyone played great, and we got a chance to let a lot of girls play,” commented Assistant Coach Bobby Renneisen.  “It was a full team effort.”
