Box Score
It
wasn’t easy, but on Friday night the Cougar men’s soccer team
went into UCSD and came away with a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
The
win improves CSUSM’s record to 4-7, and is definitely an “up”
in what has been a very up-and-down year.
The
Cougars got the scoring started in the 35th minute, as
Felix Gonzalez-Dalmas showed off some of his tremendous ability,
weaving through the defense, dribbling around the keeper, and
knocking his shot into the empty net.
It was his second goal on the year, and gave CSUSM a 1-0
lead.
The
lead would not hold long, however, as UCSD responded in the 41st
minute with a goal on a counterattack.
After halftime, with the score tied 1-1, UCSD would take the
lead with a goal off a highly debatable penalty kick that was
rewarded by the referee.
But
six minutes later, it would be the Cougars’ turn to answer.
With the UCSD defense holding the ball in their own zone,
Jacobo applied pressure, eventually pick-pocketing the ball.
He dribbled across the box about 30 yards, and rocketed a low
shot past the keeper into the corner of the net.
With
the score tied 2-2, another Jacobo would provide the game-winner.
Alvaro, the brother of Miguel, located the loose ball after a
scramble in front of UCSD’s net, and knocked it home for his first
goal in Cougar blue. It
was assisted by his brother, as well as fellow midfielder Chris
Wyatt.
CSUSM
would hold on to the 3-2 lead and solidify the well-earned victory.
The coaching staff did a little tinkering with the lineup
before the game, deciding to start some usual non-starters who had
been working hard in practice.
The move paid off, as the new faces, specifically Evan
Cohorst, played very well.
“It was a great win,” commented Assistant
Coach Bobby Renneisen. “Everyone
played well and worked very hard, and it paid off.”
