Tuesday marked the
end of the first tournament of the season for the Cougar women's
golf team, and the squad came away looking pretty good.
Competing at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational at Coldwater Golf
Club in Arizona, CSUSM placed 7th in a tough 16-team field that
featured Cal Baptist (4th), Lubbock Christian (2nd), and tourney
winner Florida Southern. The top performer for Coach Fred
Hanover's Cougars was freshman Lynell de Villa, who tied for 15th.
"Lynell was very
good," noted Hanover. "As a team, we played fairly
well. We've got a lot better golf in us."
It was a good team effort for
CSUSM, as most of the squad's eight golfers finished within a few
shots of each other in the two-round event. After de Villa's
153 (+9), fellow newcomer Roxanne Mejia was the squad's next
finisher, tying for 27th with a 156.
Returning golfers and expected
team leaders Carly Ludwig and Ellyse Siu were next, finishing with
157 and 158. They tied for 30th and 32nd, respectively.
Rounding out the squad were
Adriana Bormann (160), Kate Hansen (161), Katie Lorden (161), and
Danielle Pearce (168). All of them are expected to contribute
this season, as they did last spring.
The Cougar women's golf team
will continue its fall season on October 14th at the Aztec
Invitational, hosted by San Diego State. |
