Competing in
beautiful Waikoloa, Hawaii, the Cougar women's golf team was able to
stay focused and finish 5th in the 12-team field. Carly Ludwig led
the way, tying for 8th.
While the trip
featured the requisite amount of Hawaiian fun, the team was there to
play golf, and they did so quite well. Playing on the 5,943-yard
par-72 Waikoloa Kings Golf Course, the Cougars shot a three-day
total score of +148, finishing fifth, just four strokes behind the
third-place finishers. Cal Baptist won the tournament with a total
score of +111.
Coach Hanover
brought a team that featured the six returning active members of
last season’s squad, as a way to both reward them and prepare them
for the upcoming spring season. Despite very windy conditions which
led to high scores from the entire field, the Cougars hung in there
in a field of mostly NCAA Division II teams
Senior Carly
Ludwig did the best of anyone, shooting rounds of 80, 79, and 88 for
a total of +31 (247). Though the final day 88 might look high, the
average score from the entire field that day (which featured
particularly difficult conditions) was a whopping 90. The 8th-place
finish is the best of the fall for Ludwig, who is expected to be one
of the squad’s top golfers in the spring.
Not far behind
was Adriana Bormann, who finished in 13th with a score of
+34 (250). Her second-round 76 was not just the best round by any
Cougar in the tournament; it was the best of any golfer on the day.
Also competing
in the scenic event were Ellyse Siu (255), Katie Lorden (263), and
Kathryn Hansen (265). They finished in 20th, 35th,
and 40th place, respectively.
The team will
be back to business as usual this week, as they’ll be at Cal Poly to
play their final tournament of the fall beginning this Sunday.
