Marcus Sostuk won
the Fall Cougar Invitational on Saturday, holding off two players
from Orange Coast College. Scott Conway tied for 4th, making
him the Cougars' top finisher.
It was the final
action of the fall for the Cougar men's golf team. The
two-round tournament was hosted by Cal State San Marcos at Lake San
Marcos Country Club, and featured 28 competitors. No team
scores were calculated.
At the end of round
1, Sostuk was tied for the lead with two of his fellow golfers from
College of the Desert after shooting even-par 71. He followed
that up with a 74 on Saturday for a total score of +3 (144), two
shots ahead of Orange Coast College's Jeff Grant and Dustin Andres.
CSUSM's Conway shot
74-76, tying for 4th with Brian Razzari from Holy Names University
at +8 (150). Fellow Cougar Brandon Gandy was not far behind,
shooting +10 (152). Also competing from CSUSM were Kevin Riley
(16th; 159), Shezad Lakdawala (19th; 163), and Kyle Kelch (T20th;
165).
"I'm very happy
with Scott [Conway] and Brandon's [Gandy] play this fall," commented
CSUSM Coach Fred Hanover. "We're hoping to get more out of the
rest of the team in the spring."
The rest of the
team should get a boost in the spring, as All-Region performer
Markus Wendel is expected to compete. The team is expected, as
usual, to be a top-10 squad in the NAIA and compete for a national
championship. |
