Women’s Golf Closes Out Fall with 13th Place Finish at Cal Poly

Competing in their final tournament of the Fall season, the Cougar women’s golf team placed 13th in the 18-team field at the Lamkin Cup/Cal Poly Invitational.  Carly Ludwig was the Cougars’ top finisher, tying for 20th.

The two-day tournament, hosted by Cal Poly, was won by UC Riverside.  Their total team score of 598 was a mere six shots better than that of the host school and Northern Arizona.  CSUSM finished with a score of 654.  The field was composed primarily of NCAA Division II teams, as well as three top NAIA teams, including CSUSM.

Coming off last week’s tournament in Hawaii, Coach Fred Hanover’s roster this week featured only two of the golfers that competed at that event.  Given the team’s relatively strong finish (considering the field they were playing in), and it’s safe to say that there will be some healthy competition within the team come springtime.

“I’m very optimistic about the spring,” noted Hanover.  “The girls are going to be competing for spots, which is a good situation to have.”

One player whose spot is safe, however, is Carly Ludwig.  The senior had her best showing of the fall, and should be the team’s top golfer in the spring.  Her tournament this week was highlighted by an excellent second-round 75.

Hollee Johnson was the team’s next finisher, tying for 50th with a total score of 164.  Her score was deceptively high, however; during round two, she shot a 10 on one hole.  If not for that, her 83 for the day would have been much lower.  Even still, Johnson shaved more than 25 shots off her total score from her last tournament (at SDSU earlier this fall).

Also competing for the Cougars were Adriana Bormann (T53; 165), Linnel de Villa (T77; 172), and Roxanne Mejia (T77; 172).
