Playing on the familiar fairways
of San Luis Rey Downs, the Cal State San Marcos men’s golf team
looked very good on Monday, and sit tied for third after one round.
All-American Scott Conway is tied for second in the individual
competition.
The three-round tournament, hosted by CSUSM, is played on San Luis
Rey Downs par-72, 6,750 yard course. Two rounds were scheduled to be
played on Monday; but darkness suspended the finish of the second
round until Tuesday morning.
Fresno State leads the large field of 20 teams with a total score of
294. They’re followed closely by Cal State East Bay at 297. CSUSM
and Point Loma are tied for third at 300. The University of La Verne
rounds out the top-5, with a score of 303.
Conway, the Cougars’ #1 golfer, shot 38 going out – but a
scorching-hot 33 on the back-nine put him within one shot of the
lead. His -1 (71) is tied with CSU-East Bay’s Bobby Bucey, and a
shot behind Fresno State’s Grant Doverspike.
Just behind them is another Cougar, Brandon Gandy. Gandy looked
great on Monday, shooting even-par 72, good for a tie for fourth.
Also competing for CSUSM were Shezad Lakdawala (78), Kevin Riley
(79), and Chris Vascellaro (86). Kyle Kelch competed as an
individual and shot 81.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with the final two rounds of
play.
