Led by individual tournament
winner Grant Doverspike, Fresno State was crowned champion of the
CSUSM Men's Golf Invitational on Tuesday. The Cougars, who
hosted the event at local San Luis Rey Downs, finished 6th.
The three-round tournament,
which started on Monday, was played on San Luis Rey Downs' par-72
6,750-yard course. Fresno State led from wire-to-wire, winning
with a total team score of 877. Point Loma Nazarene placed
second with a score of 885, and the University of La Verne shot 895
to finish third. The Cougars were not far behind, placing
sixth with a score of 919. Twenty schools competed at the
tournament. Doverspike was
outstanding all three rounds, shooting 70-69-69 for a total of -8
(208), three shots ahead of Point Loma's Sam Cyr. CSUSM's top
finisher was senior Scott Conway, whose 71-77-69 tied him for fifth
at +1 (217). Like Conway,
the rest of the Cougar team had difficulty in round two, which was
split between the two days of the tournament. After a very
nice round one score of 300, the team shot a round 317 in round two.
But they bounced back brilliantly Tuesday afternoon, shooting 302 to
earn the tie for 5th.
Brandon Gandy finished second on the team, tying for 26th overall
with a score of +12 (228). Next were Kevin Riley and Shezad
Lakdawala, who both shot 238. Their strong final round 77's
helped the Cougars bounce back from the difficult round two.
Rounding out the was Chris Vascellero at 253.
CSUSM will host the women's CSUSM Invitational next
week at Lake San Marcos Country Club. |
