In the Cougar track & field
team’s first event of the spring, four runners earned their “A”
Standard at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Indoor Qualifier over the
weekend. Three other runners earned their “B” standard.
With the distance runners not competing until mid-March, the
sprinters shined on Saturday. Samantha Showns led the way, winning
the 400-meter dash event with a time of 56.80. The senior will be
looking to earn All-American status at Nationals yet again.
Ashleigh Davis finished second in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of
8.99 is good for the A Standard, and like Showns, she’s looking to
repeat as an All-American. She also just missed the B Standard in
the 60-meter dash.
On the men’s side, Billy Walker ran the 60-meter dash in 6.93
seconds, good for third place, as well as his A standard and a trip
to Nationals. Walker also finished in fifth in the 200-meter dash
with a time of 22.37, good for the B standard in that event.
Kevin Ott Wright punched his ticket for Nationals as well, finishing
second in the 600-meter with a time of 1:21.48, good for the
A-standard.
Nick Stein topped a trio of Cougars competing in the 400-meter dash,
earning his B standard with a time of 50.24 en route to finishing
fourth.
Finally, both 4x400-meter relay teams had good showings, with the
women earning the A standard and the men earning the B. The women
won the event with a time of 4:02.37, while the men took second with
a 3:20.51.
Also competing for the team were Lucia Asbury (6th) and Stephanie
Erdodi (11th) in the women’s 400-meter; Cory Dart (8th) and Sid
Robinson (11th) in the men’s 400-meter; Thomas McDougal (9th), Adam
Ledigh (11th), and Kuba Wasowski (17th) in the men’s 60-meter; and
Jaime Carillo (4th) in the men’s 600-meter.
The Cougar track team will be back in action next Saturday at the
CSUSM 500-mile relay, here on campus!
