Box Score
Jason Hinton, Jared Suwyn, and
Terry Moritz all tallied three hits, and Steve Triolo was solid on
the mound as the Cougars cruised to a 12-5 victory over Vanguard on
Tuesday. The win brings
CSUSM to within a game of .500 at 7-8. Vanguard falls to 6-8. On
Tuesday, Vanguard jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead thanks to a
two-out RBI single and throwing error. CSUSM got those runs
back in the third, as Ricardo Moran led off with a single and Austin
Way hammered the game-tying home run. Vanguard re-took the
lead that same inning with a Jason Machado solo home run, and the
Cougars re-tied it in the fifth with a Moritz solo shot. At
that point, it looked like the back-and-forth game would remain a
nail-biter to the end. But San Marcos had other ideas.
With the score tied at 3, Hinton led off the sixth with a single,
stole second, and would score on an error that allowed Moran to
reach. Walks to Way and Moritz loaded the bases, and Suwyn
came through with an RBI single - on which a throwing error
allowed all three runs to score. A wild pitch let Suwyn score,
and after a walk to Morgan Wynne, Austin Coleman boomed an RBI
double to right-center. Coleman would cross the plate on a
passed ball, capping off the inning's scoring with CSUSM up a
comfortable 10-5. Vanguard
would never get close, as Hinton delivered an eighth inning RBI
single and Mike Pena knocked a ninth inning solo homer for
insurance. Cougar
starter Steve Triolo recovered from allowing the pair of first
inning runs to turn in a very good start. He went 6 innings,
gave up 3 runs (2 earned), walked only 2, and struck out 6.
The limited number of walks is particularly encouraging for Triolo,
who has outstanding stuff but has at times struggled with
control. CSUSM's bullpen was solid, with McClinton Heil
pitching the team out of a potential jam in the eighth and Lance
McCormick throwing a perfect ninth. The
Cougars will play in a special game on Thursday, scrimmaging against
the Spanish Olympic Team at Morley Field.
