Track & Field Shines at San Diego City Championships

Competing against U.C. San Diego, Point Loma, and San Diego State, the Cal State San Marcos track & field looked great at the San Diego City Championships on Saturday.

Billy Walker highlighted the numerous strong Cougar performances.  The senior won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events with times of 11.15 and 22.58, respectively.  He was also on the winning 4x100-meter relay team, which included Adam Leidigh, Thomas McDougal, and Austin Sylvia.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team was victorious as well.  Cory Dart, Kevin Ott Wright, Nicholas Stein, and McDougal combined to run 3:20.80 and win th event by three seconds.

In the field, Ronnie McFadden won the discus throw easily.  His throw of 46.42 was three meters clear of the second-place finisher.

On the women’s side, Dallon Williams won the Cougar-dominated 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:19.36.  Teammates Jessica Sandoval, Laura Heuring, and Joy Leon followed her in to make it an all-CSUSM top-four for the event.

Of the CSUSM athletes who didn’t win their events, many of them had strong showings nonetheless.  Samantha Showns placed second in the 400-meter with a time of 57.50; Monika Valenzuela ran 2:23.06 in the 800-meter to finish fifth; and the women’s 4x100-meter relay team placed third with a time of 48.91.  Jessica Staub also placed in the top-10 in two field events.

On the men’s side, Ott Wright and Stein placed second and third in the 400-meter dash, with respective times of 50.91 and 51.10.  Tony Guadagnini finished second in the 800-meter, running 1:56.49.  Chris Capeau ran the 1,500-meter in 4:06.12 to finish third.  Dart placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.45, David Freund cleared 4.50 meters in the pole vault to finish third, and Aaron Parker’s long jump of 5.81 meters was good for fifth.
