Box Score
Facing an NCAA Division I
opponent for the first time this season, Cougar softball went to the
University of San Diego on Wednesday looking for an upset – but
the Torreros had other ideas, winning by a score of 6-0.
Torreros starter Jennifer
Ellenbeck shut down the CSUSM offense almost completely,
surrendering just one hit and four walks.
She struck out two in going the full seven innings.
For the Cougars, starter Melissa
Lerno did her best against USD’s tough lineup, but in the end they
proved too much. Her
defense also struggled, committing three errors, including on in the
first inning that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Lerno gave up five runs in her four innings of work, but only
two of those runs were earned.
After scoring two in the first,
USD added one in the second, two in the fourth, and one more in the
fifth. Brenna Sandberg
finished the game for the Cougars, pitching a solid two innings of
one-run ball.
CSUSM’s lone hit came in the
third inning, as Erica Coelho laced a one-out single to right.
The Cougars drew two walks in the sixth, but Ellenbeck
slammed the door to preserve the shutout.
CSUSM
will get back to NAIA competition next week, and will travel to
Vanguard on the 19th for a double-header with big Region
II implications.
