Coach Steve Scott's track &
field team posted a couple more impressive showings on Friday, as
the distance runners competed at the Occidental Distance Carnival
while the rest took part in the Aztec Track and Field Classic.
The story was Morgan Sjogren,
who set a school record en route to winning the 10,000-meter.
She finished first among the women with a time of 35:28.
The junior was the cross-country team's #1 runner last season and
top finisher at Nationals, and she is certainly poised to make an
impact this spring.
For the second time in as many
meets, Dallon Williams and Billy Walker came away winners.
Williams won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at Occidental with
a time of 10:48.16, while Walker won the 100-meter dash at SDSU in
10.73 seconds.
The Cougars had a number of
other high finishers as well. At Occidental, Sergio Gonzalez
made his season debut in impressive fashion, placing second in the
10,000-meter with a time of 30:25.90. Tony Guadagnini took
fourth in the men's 1,500-meter with a time of 3:57.06, and
Stephanie Cook ran 4:52.46 in the women's 1,500-meter for sixth.
At SDSU, Nicholas Stein finished
second in the 400-meter dash, running 49.98. David
Freund continued his great performances in the pole vault, clearing
4.47 meters for second place. Stephanie Erdodi took fourth in
the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.31. Jaime
Carillo rounded out the top-five finishers, placing fifth in the
800-meters with a time of 2:07.16.
The rest of the team will
compete on Saturday at day two of the Aztec event.
