The Cougar men’s and women’s golf teams continued their march to Regionals on Tuesday, competing at the Diablo Grande Invitatational.  The women, led by Carly Ludwig, placed 6th; while the men, competing without #1 golfer Scott Conway, took 10th.

The event, hosted by Drake University, consisted of three rounds of golf at Diablo Grande Golf Course.  Featuring numerous NCAA schools, the field for the men’s competition totaled 11 teams, while 10 women’s teams competed.

On the women’s side, Carly Ludwig was on her game.  The senior got better as the tournament went on, starting with an 86, then shooting a round two 81 – and following those up with a ridiculous +1 (73) in the final round.  Yung Na Lee, the eventual tournament winner from U. of Minnesota, was the only golfer in the entire field to shoot a better round.

Ludwig’s three-day total of 240 was good for sixth place overall.

Other Lady Cougars competing were Natalie Todd (T-31; 257), Adriana Bormann (T-35; 262), Ellyse Siu (T-40; 264), and Roxanne Mejia (T-49; 273).  Kathryn Hansen and Katie Lorden also competed as individuals, finishing tied for 51st and 55th, respectively.

Minnesota won the women’s event with a total team score of 952.  CSUSM finished with a 1015, ahead of Creighton and a few shots back of Wichita State.

On the men’s side, the shorthanded Cougars made the best of a tournament without All-American Scott Conway, doing an admirable job of competing with just four golfers.

Shezad Lakdawala and Kevin Riley turned in very nice performances, tying for 25th and 28th, respectively.  After a first-round 84, Lakdawala shot the best round of any Cougars – a second-round 76 – and finished with a final-round 78 for a total score of 238.  Riley was solid throughout, shooting 81-78-80 for a total of 239.

Also competing for the men’s team were Brandon Gandy (T-57; 258) and Kyle Kelch (60; 263).

Both Cougars golf squads have one more event before April’s Region II Championships.
