Track & Field Shines Amidst Tough Competition at Cal-Nevada Championships

Coach Steve Scott’s track & field team showed it can hang with anyone on Saturday, competing against mostly NCAA Division-I schools at the Cal-Nevada Championships. The Cougar men’s team finished 7th out of 20 teams, while the women took 9th out of 21 teams.

To put that in context, the men finished ahead of UCSD (among others), while the women finished ahead of UNLV (among others). The men earned 43 team points, while the women earned 36.

Morgan Sjogren, Sergio Gonzalez, and Dallon Williams got CSUSM ten points each by winning their respective events. Sjogren and Gonzalez dominated the 5k, winning both the women’s and men’s competitions. Sjogren ran 17:10 to finish ahead of 33 runners in the women’s event, while Gonzalez came in at 14:56 to top 24 others in the men’s race. Dallon Williams won her third straight 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:45.

Also posting strong finishes for the Cougars were Whitney Patton,, 3rd in the steeplechase with a time of 11:13; Ashleigh Davis, who placed 4th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.34; and Samantha Showns, who took 7th in the 400-meter at 56.68.

On the men’s side, Cory Dart and Kevin Ott Wright finished 2nd and 5th in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 53.35 and 54.64 seconds, respectively; Billy Walker took 7th in the 100-meter dash, running 10.96; Aaron Parker finished 7th in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.29; David Freund cleared 4.75 meters in the pole vault to take 7th; and Nicholas Stein placed 8th in the 400-meter with a time of 49.79. The 4x100-meter relay team took 4th, while the 4x400-meter took 6th.

Next week the track & field team will compete at Pomona Pitzer.
