Box Score
Cougar baseball continued to
roll on Saturday, issuing a 16-2 pounding of Occidental College.
Tristan Gale led the way with a pair of homers.
The win, CSUSM’s sixth in a
row, brings the Cougars to 16-14-1 on the year.
Unlike a few games during this
current streak, he outcome of Saturday’s contest was never in
doubt. The Cougars
jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead, extended it to 9-0 in the
second, and 11-0 in the third.
It was 16-0 in the fifth when Occidental plated its two runs.
Of the many Cougar hitters to
have big games, Tristan Gale had the best.
The centerfielder broke out of a pseudo-slump with two big
homers, his 8th and 9th of the season.
Gale tallied 4 RBI’s and 4 runs scored on the day.
First baseman Jackson Chapelone
went 3-for-3 with 5 RBI, Johnny Omahen tallied a pair of hits
and 3 RBI, and Louie Russo was 2-for-4 with a homer.
Austin Coleman and Mike Pena drove in runs as well.
It’s not like starting pitcher
Johnny Holtman needed all that run support, either.
Holtman, who has been outstanding as of late, surrendered
just two runs over five quality innings of work.
His control was solid as usual, walking just two hitters and
striking out four.
The Cougar bullpen turned in a
good effort as well, as four relievers combined to throw four
scoreless innings. Steve
Triolo worked around a pair of hits to escape the sixth, and Lance
McCormick, Eric Julienne, and David Julio each threw hitless frames
to close out the 16-2 victory.
CSUSM
will look to continue its win streak on Tuesday at Cal State
Dominguez Hills.
